El Martes - 5/27

Today was our second day at the Jose Quiñones Air Force school.  Whereas yesterday we had our introduction to and tour of the school, today we got down to business and started off our week of learning and conversing with the students at the FAP (Fuerza Aire del Perú) school.  The first thing we did when we got there was split up into groups and go to English classes to speak with the students.  I was in a group that went to one of the higher level English classes and they spoke quite well.  The topic of the day was traditional foods so we talked with them about that and I learned that people outside of the US think that all we eat are burgers and pizza.  They were shocked to learn that I have each of those only maybe once a month.

We then sat in on a lecture with the oldest students of the school titled, "Was Peru Discovered or Conquered?"  Westerners have a habit of claiming credit for the "discovery" of the Eastern world.  But this is quite the falsity, as nobody really "discovered" the Americas because for essentially as long as there have been humans on Earth, they have inhabited the Americas.  I guess if you want to get technical, it would be the migrators from Africa who discovered the Americas because the first humans were African and then spread up through Asia and over the Bering Straight from Russia to Alaska to get to the Americas.  It was difficult to fully comprehend the whole lecture and presentation but it was cool to be able to at least understand some of it.  I can definitely see my Spanish improving, just over this past week and a half... pretty cool!
