Today was our final day at the Jose Quiñones school. We didn't have Spanish classes in the morning which was nice because we got to sleep in a little. We went to the school and just hung out with the fifth graders (of escuela secondaria, so essentially seniors), for a while and then were brought to the auditorium of the school, which was actually quite beautiful. The auditorium was filled with all the students from first-fifth grade of high school.. so in US terminology, 8th grade to seniors in high school. First the director of the school spoke about the importance of forging cross-cultural relationships whenever possible and thanked us for taking the time to come spend time with the students at his school.
Then we were all called up on stage and given a shirt and hat to thank us - the ceremony was extremely nice. Then, the high school band played and IT WAS AWESOME. They played what I think was traditional Peruvian music, with flutes, cajons, singing, and guitars. Then various groups of dancers came out and danced to the live music. I was really impressed by how good both the band and the dancers were. After the performance some of us from NU went up on stage and played with some of the students in the band, which was a blast (I always love me some good spontaneous music).
